I have enjoyed using a lot of lessons from ReadWriteThink so I checked and they have a whole slew of lessons that incorporate critical literacy skills. Now I haven't looked through them all but there are a few that look like they will fit our curriculum. This link (above) will take you directly to the page with the lessons. You can also look up lessons for high school and adapt as needed.

Int'l Reading Association Link

The Interntional Reading Association has been kind enough to put together a page of resources pertaining to critical literacy. It includes lesson plans for grades 6 - 8, including topics such as point of view, TV as text, and commercials. There's even one for writing a persuasive essay. :-)

Book Clubs

I'm getting ready to ask my students to think about the books that they're reading for their book clubs from a different perspective. I was thinking that I would just type up the list of all of the switches on pgs 47-48 in the text and asking them to apply one of the switches to their book. I'm wondering if this is a good idea because I haven't directly taught critical literacy to my classes yet. Do you think this is jumping in too quickly? Maybe I should take a day and teach the lesson outlined in the book using "The Giving Tree." Thoughts?

It's Our First Post!

Welcome, fellow bloggers!

After our discussion during fifth hour today, we decided that our next reading "assignment" is chapters three and four. We'd like to have them done when we get back from spring break, so that puts us at Monday, March 9th.

If anything pops up during the reading that you'd like to opine about, feel free to start a post about it. We'll all jump on board and comment up a storm. 

This is gonna be fun.

And intellectually-stimulating, of course.
